In short, I've been making money online with my own business for the past 18 years. I first started making money online when I was a kid in high school and it's just been growing by leaps and bounds every year.
You need to be passionate about what you are writing about, otherwise it will just be another job.
I write for a lot of web sites and blogs. If you aren't well trained and knowledgeable about what you are writing about, then you are already off on a bad foot. You need to be passionate about what you are writing about, otherwise it will just be another job. I'm currently writing on ZacJohnson.com and BloggingTips.com... in addition to a bunch of other sites I continually guest write for. Since launching the blog in 2007, I have over 3,000 published articles across various sites.
Great content marketing is all about providing value and selling the product or experience. Anyone can write an article, but actually being able to write something that people can relate with and makes them want to take action immediately... now that's powerful!
I wouldn't consider myself a merchant, and I'm actually doing a lot less affiliate work than ever before. Right now I am focusing on a handful of projects which all comes back to building my own brand in the process.
There are a million different ways to make money online. I would keep trying different ones til you find what works, then absolutely kill it. Personally I like Facebook Ads. It's easy to target anyone, anywhere and you can really drill down on your audience with the demographic targeting that Facebook offers. If you can get good at Facebook Ads and creating killer ad copy, you can make a ton of money.
I've always focused on building out my own site and not buying them. The one site that I did buy ended up costing me $60,000 and it was a good investment which also helped grow out my personal brand and reach in the process. Flippa is loaded with web sites for sale, but weeding out the good ones is a mission in itself.
The site has to be something I'm interested in, otherwise I will lose interest and waste money. The site doesn't have to be making money, but it should have a way that I can better monetize it versus the current owners. Lastly, it needs to be a great deal. Buying and selling web sites isn't a fun business and it's not one I would ever want to be in. Buying new sites also takes up more time and resources, so make sure you only buy what's worth your time, money and effort.
Everyone and anyone can make money online, but the majority of people will fail because they don't have the passion or interest to make it work. For every success story you hear, there are another thousand people behind them that failed. The odds are heavily against you, but if you put in the effort, there is a ton of money to be made.
